The Significance of colour in culture

Colors evoke strong physiological and emotional responses both positive and negative.Different colour have different meaning to different people according to their own culture.
Chinese culture.
Red colour means good fortune and joy.That is why chinese gives red
packet to their family ,relatives and also friends during chinese new
year.It is to wish people good luck in coming years.Red also represent
fire in chinese culture.It is one of the five elements( fire, wood ,water
, metal, earth) that connected to chinese
beliefs named 'feng-shui'.they believe that


these five elements create everything that
exist in nature and red elements which named as fire is an elements that can chase out all evil.
Besides, golden and yellow are also significance colour of chinese.These two colours are the traditional colour that used in imperial services and it shows royalty, wealth and also hapiness.chinese also associate these two colour with the five elements. (golden-metal,yellow-earth).






Indian cultures

In India, brides traditionally wear red gowns and once married
their foreheads are adorned with a red dot or tikka.It means
commitment. And i think that the significant cultures of
indian cultures is red. But in india, red colour represents
something quite different with chinese cultural. For them,
red means purity. Soldiers wore red turbans in battle,
women wore red clothes and reddened their hands and
hair during marriage or fertility festivals.And Because of the
wedding represents the
beginning of a union of
two individuals and their family , the color red also symbolizes fertility and prosperity.
Besides red, there is
another colour that
represents their cultures. It is green. The color
green represents a new beginning. This is also the colour that they used to honour islam.








Other cultures
Besides these 2 cultures,there are also many significance of colour in others cultures . And i hav list a few of that..hope you all enjoy reading this..^^

RED
western culture : passion, romance, fire, violence, aggression.
stop or signals warning or forbidden actions in many cultures.

BROWN
north-america: conveying strength(they use this colour in coffee packaging n also logos of coffee chain >starbucks)

PURPLE
western culture : creativity, mystery, royalty, mysticism, rarity.
associated with death in some cultures.
GREEN
western culture : nature, healing , fertility, growth, envy. In North American cultures, green means go, is associated with environmental awareness, and is often linked to fiscal matters.
indonesia : forbidden(don't use green if u r planning business with indonesian)
South america: death
middle east: luck
WHITE
chinese: mourning,death
western culture : purity, innocence, cleanliness, truth, peace, coldness, sterility
BLACK
western culture :power, sophistication, contemporary style, death, morbidity, evil.
BLUE
western culture : loyalty, security, conservatism, tranquility, coldness, sadness.
Iran : immortality
YELLOW
western culture : brightness, illumination, illness, cowardice.
saudi arabian : reliability,strength

  3. haha, in my social circle, me and my friends find that Green colour indicates stingy, sel-fish. coz las time when i was workin as part-time, we will make a joke if we serve a customer with green shirt or green tie, as he would not buy our stuff easily. XD

    another taboo for my chinese could be, not to wear green hat or cap. XD it carry a meaning that ur wife or gf would be unfaithful to u and be with another person without ur knowledge. XD haha..

  5. in Chinese culture Yellow represents royalty back in those days of the emperors,
    now it got some other meanings in our modern society,
    for example Yellow describes something to be of pornographic related in speech.

  7. Yeah ! I learn a lot here. I think Red colour is important for most of the races and culture. Because it represent passion, happiness, good luck, etc. But Red colour, for some culture, is a taboo. Because, Red, for them is represent blood. So they consider red as something bad and something "celaka" thing may happen.

  9. such a disturbing finding..haha.. in the sense that you could easily hurt other people's feelings in the airplane or in the airport without even knowing it just because you wore a colour that is a taboo for them..
