CULTURE TERMINOLOGIES..

A FEW WORDS ABOUT CULTURE…

Culture - the language,values,beliefs, traditions & customs people share and learn.
-HIGH CONTEXT CULTURE -
*relies heavily on subtle,often nonverbal cues to maintain social harmony.
*communicators abstrain from saying "NO" directly.

-LOW CONTEXT CULTURE-
* Uses language primarily to express thoughts feelings, and ideas as directly and logically as possible.
* clear, eloquent speech considered praiseworthy. verbal fluency admired.(RESEARCH BY:Anthropologist Edward Hall(1959)

-INDIVIDUALISTIC CULTURE-
* Self is separate,unique individual;should be independent, self-sufficient.
* individual should take care of himself or herself and immediate family.
* high value on autonomy. youth, individual security, equality.

-COLLECTIVISTIC CULTURES-
* People belong to extended family or in groups.
* person should take care of extended family before self.High value on duty, order, tradition,age,status and hierarchy.

-POWER DISTANCE-
* Describe the degree to which members of a society accept an unequal distribution of power.

-LOW POWER DISTANCE-
* Believe in minimizing the difference between various social classes.
* US & CANADA-LOW POWER DISTANCE.(Hoftede's research)

  3. explanation is splendid...but it would be better if examples are added in..it make the terms easier to get into our head. =)

  4. Agreed, examples should be added to give a more vivid picture of those terms or it can be a bit daunting for the lay men
