It was our very first class. This was the time we finally meet each other after such a long sem break. but anyway we are still as lively as ever. Miss Cheryl was here explaining to us the introduction of interpersonal communication. Us being the student of ADP, this is the first time we actually touched a communication subject [as public speaking ain't really a comm paper]
We started with the Introduction of Interpersonal Communication. Generally, Interpersonal Communication is a subject that we learn to communicate and interact with people, no matter in a group or to an individual.
So number one rule, we said HELLO TO EVERYONE!!!
Through communication, we also learn human behaviour from the way he/she react, the way he/she talk and the way he/she express himself/herself.
I think Interpersonal Communication is an interesting subject... :-) Lets think about what if we facing someone from a different planet? An Outlander? How should we approach to that OUTLANDER??
We started off knowing everyone in the class as there are new students. And the first activity of the class was to write down our own personality.
1. - personality that is known by others
2. - personality that is unknown to others

[part two - 22.01.09]
This was the second lesson of our Interpersonal Communication, while it was only the first lesson for sanique ( >"< ) because he was absent for the first class without a proper reason. ( XD haha~)
Well, the very first thing that miss Cheryl did was.......
she reads out all the "hidden + unknown + omg~" characteristics of ADP-ians that we have passed up during the previous lessons.
at the same time, she asked us to take a guess on these hidden characters whether who is HE/SHE? (ngiak ngiak~).
We found out that some of them were having a quite obvious characteristics, but some... were shocking =.=''
So in this activity, we do actually observed that we might have some identities that were not known by others. Perhaps, friends around us could only just notice our "IMAGES", but not our real identities. Somehow, people may have a different behaviour in different environment. In fact, by concerning the images people looking at us, we may resulted by behaving ego, not sincere, tell lies and so on.
Let's take sanique as an example, he is a extremely talkative and highper active person, but actually, he likes to spend his time alone, sitting aside and observes people around him.
While the next on, we were being taught with few new things. @o@
1. Dyadic Primary"Dy" brings the meaning of two. So basically dyadic primary means a person in a basic relationship (basic relationship)
2. Dyadic Coalition(forced to be in a group)It means an individual is forced to be in a group. This may bring benefit or loss depending on what situation the individual is at.
3. Dyadic ConsciousnessThis brings the meaning of an individual who knows his or her roles in the relationship as he or she is conscious about it.
For example,
Before before marriage, a couple can go out and party till very late at night. However, after being married and have children, the couple know that they could no longer live their life in such a wild manner as they would have to commit themselves and take up the role as parents and take good care of their children.
Not only that, the discussion continues. When it comes to a form of communication, in our advanced era, there are many forms of communications that has been created. Back in our ancestor's time when they were still living in caves, they are limited to verbal face-to-face communication and providing signals such as the smoke from fire only. However as the technology grew more and more advanced, we can now communication with each other even if we are a thousand miles apart.
There are many forms of communication that exists today. For example, communication through phone, internet, face-to-face contact and so on. We discussed more about internet communication as this form of communication is used widely by society.
Online Communication can be categorized into different aspect :-
a)Instant Messenger [MSN,Yahoo,IChat]

b)Chat Group [MiRC]
c)E-mail
d)Forum/Mailing Groups

There are some that involved verbal communication such as skype
Although online communication is very fast and efficient, sometimes it is harder for the other party to know the truth or sincerity out of the communication as emotion was not showed. Thus communication in out era had evolved and the way of communicating now is different compared to the time of our ancestors'.
Another impressive lesson was..
THE BULLET THEORY ( bang~!)
before getting into the bullet theory, there's a study concerning the similar theory, which is the Bobo dolls experiment. It's a famous psychological studies of children and aggressive behaviour by
"These were experimental studies in which children of nursery school age observed a playroom in which an adult was hitting, punching, kicking and throwing a large inflatable doll. Particular actions were used (such as using a hammer and saying 'Pow... boom... boom') which children would be unlikely to perform spontaneously. The children were then observed as they played alone in the playroom with the doll for 10 to 20 minutes. A control group of children was allowed to play with the doll without observing the aggressive adult behaviour. As one might expect, the children who witnessed the adult aggression performed similar acts; the others did not."
but then, arguments on this theory were emerged from various scientists all around the world. They argued that this theory were not accurate whereby even if watching aggressive or violent programme does increse aggressiveness of ones, it may be just a short term phenomenon, and so on.
SO, the Bullet theory is actually asserting that regardless of a person's social status, education, gender, and what so ever, the bullets of propaganda from the media get into people's heads and change their mentalities and behaviours instantly. This theory also stated that people had no control to screen or criticize the messages, and therefore have no control over what they feel.
A video on how children follow what they see
Another 2theories concerning media delivering messages is,
THE MEDIA 2 STEPS THEORY (or 2 steps flow theory ).
In this theory, it divides the flow of media into two major groups; the opinion leaders, or the individuals that pay their attentions to the media constantly.
further into this theory, there are 4 different characteristic of personal contact.
1). being non-purposiveness.
2). flexibility to counter resistance.
3). trust.
4). persuasion without conviction.
THE MULTI-STEPS THEORY
this theory indicates that informations were flowed and delivered to observers by various types of channels or groups.
For example, the old coke ad states that coke were so great and magnificent
and then, there was the usage of celebraties to enhance and promote the lifestyle of pepsi
and here goes the fight of the two carbonated drinks..
this let the viewers felt that these two carbonated drinks are both the best and they are competing against each other

finally, the day was over~~~~ our little peanut size of brains were going to have a explosion if there were another theory FLOWS into it.. =.=''
The dyad have the highest intimacy but very unstable.. one member loses interest then dyad will collapse..
the triad have less intimacy compare to dyad but more stable.. there will be two members where thier bond are stronger causing the third member to felt isolated.. When two people argue there will be one who will solve the problem between those two..

[part three - 23.01.09]
In the third class, we shared our experiences of relationship between men and women. In that discussion, I learned the ways to understand both sex in relationship. For example, I understanding how men and women cope differently in relationship. Besides, I also know that the thinking and behaviour of men and women are totally different. I suggest the couples should read 'Why Mars & Venus Collide' to improve their relationships.
We do discussed about relationship on that day.Relationship between family members, between friends and between a couple is important to everyone of us.
In my opinion, in any relationship, 3Cs are important for us to apply... that is COMPROMISING, COMMITMENT & COMMUNICATION.
Communication...there are various type of communication. Through verbal, online or even body language. For example, when a person is angry...He/she no need to say :"I am angry". But, through the facial...we know he/she is angry. Is impossible for he/ she to smile at you when he/she is angry, right?? :-)
Don't stress out already ^^
Heres a joke to make u smile today
A cute way for this video clip that represent woman
-claudia-
and here is a video made from the SWEC-KYSM group on how important it is to have a good communication skill..

if the guy would have a better communication skill, and were to be able to persuade his girlfriend, he would not ended up being dumped by the girl.. notice the expression on his face were laughing?? the girl will interpret the guy as not being sincere thus not believe a single thing he said..
in contrary, take a peek at this video

the first event, again the guy lack of communication skill.. thus the girl went away as the guy was not persuasive enough.. however, at the second incident, the one guy with brilliant communication skills get to know the two hot girls in college..
SO LONG!!

In the first class, Miss Cheryl taught us about:
ReplyDelete1.a)Dyadic Primary(basic relationship)
b)Dyadic Coalition(forced to be in a group)
-it may bring productive.
-it may not bring productive.
c)Dyadic Consciousness(relationship which
make you conscious about it)
2.Online Communication
a)Instant Messenger(MSN,Yahoo,ICQ)
b)Chat Group
c)E-mail
d)Forum/Mailing Groups

ReplyDeleteGuys;
ReplyDeleteMy observation.
PART 1
Use of Video1- Quite interesting, lively and opens up spaces for discussion of human behavior, abstract no doubt but interesting.
Explained what happened in class well
PART 2
Did not spell my name correctly. My name is Ms Cheryl. Examples for Dyadic Primary and Coalition are missing, if do not intend to insert please do not leave the space. Images used for Online communication is good but small, perhaps could have been bigger and explanations of why it is essential could have been inserted as what is explained is very minimal. Bullet Theory and explained our Bandura's experiment I believe is extremely simplistic and does not take into account a lot of factors, please be critical when analyzing.
Second Video was interesting and depicts actually behavior of kids but a short analysis of the video could have done it more justice.
Explanation for media 2 step theory fell short as a lot of information was very disconnected and vague. Videos were not connected to theory and explanations of it were missing.
Part 3:
Relationship- Complementary and Symmetrical were not discussed, understanding of relationship very basic and minimal did not take into account theories of IP.
Last but not least, I noticed comments mostly came from group members excluding YC,Mandy and GRP 3 representative, not much interaction, just basic comments
